Virginia
Skiing
Skiing requires
two things: mountains and snow. Virginia's Blue Ridge has both in
abundance. Wintergreen and Massanutten, two of the region's four
ski resorts, have vertical drops of 1,000 feet or better; they don't
come any higher south of New York. Those mountains attract the white
stuff and can keep it, with temperatures ranging 10 to 20 degrees
lower than in the flatlands. Natural snowfall will vary from year
to year, but the snow on the slopes stays surprisingly consistent
because of aggressive snowmaking and the use of Snomax, a process
that makes better snow at higher temperatures. Just because you're
not driving in a blizzard doesn't mean they're not skiing up a storm
at Wintergreen and Massanutten.
